About the workThe shepherd and the young woman look towards the sunset on the horizon, which sets the scene for the “Evening Peace” of the painting’s title. Establishing a devotional, religious mood was important to the Düsseldorf painter Andreas Müller – it is no coincidence that the summit cross towers above the surroundings. Müller was one of a series of artists who created Christian works of art with the support of Düsseldorf Art Academy director Wilhelm Schadow. They became famous for their church commissions, but also painted small devotional pictures such as this one.
