About the workGregor von Bochmann's view of an Estonian marketplace is not focussed on the hustle and bustle at the stalls, but on the edges of the square – and of society. He foregrounds a beggar and dogs fighting over a bone. The Estonian painter came to Düsseldorf to study art at the age of 18. He set up his own business as early as 1871; this painting was created around this time. Bochmann specialised in motifs from his homeland or from the Netherlands. Both were in high demand at the time. He represented Düsseldorf in numerous exhibitions abroad.
