About the workThis procession of actors and students is led by Master Utagawa Kuniyoshi himself, who is shown on the left from behind. He and his entourage are participating in a popular religious festival called Sannō Matsuri in Edo, now Tokyo, which takes place annually in mid-June. As inexpensive mass products, woodblock prints were popular among the middle classes; they reflected the lifestyle and self-image of the burgeoning bourgeoisie. The stylised blossom of the empress tree, which adorns parasols and fans, is the emblem of the imperial Tokugawa family.
