About the workAccording to the title, the samurai Hayashi Tanshirō Taketoshi is supposed to be depicted here, who murders two opponents with his bare hands in a battle. In reality, however, the print and its accompanying series refer to the events surrounding the general Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who unified Japan in the seventeenth century. Hideyoshi was an enemy of the Tokugawa samurai family, which ruled Japan until the nineteenth century. The Tokugawa forbade artists from critically addressing historical events and figures. The Japanese woodblock artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi circumvented this ban by changing names and locations.
