on display, room 004.1 About the workThe objects in this small still life are a reminder of the transience of all earthly things. This sombre message finds its perfect expression in the mezzotint printing technique developed towards the middle of the seventeenth century. This process can be used to reproduce tonal values ranging from light to various shades of grey to dark. It is well suited to the reproduction of paintings. As director of the Düsseldorf Picture Gallery, Lambert Krahe was fascinated by the technique. His collection of 99 mezzotint prints provides an overview from the invention of the process to the 1770s.
