About the workThe painting process in this work becomes visible line by line. It is part of the series Colour Markings, which Winfred Gaul began in late 1974. The artist first painted the unprimed canvas all over with diluted black paint. Then, working freehand, he used a paint roller to draw parallel lines across the surface, creating a lined composition. The more often he repeated this process, the denser the coloured horizontal marks appeared. They recall blackened lettering and reveal the painterly gesture. In 1977, the painting was featured in the major international exhibition documenta 6 in Kassel.
