About the workLike a barrier, the narrow red-and-white band divides the blue picture surface into two rectangles. This clear geometric order illustrates Winfred Gaul’s interest in structure created by lines and proportions. The painting marked the beginning of a series that he made between 1969 and 1972. The letter in the title refers to the work’s basic composition, while the number indicates its position in the series. Willi and Ingrid Kemp acquired this work in the year it was painted; it was the first painting by Winfred Gaul to enter their collection.
