About the workIn the early 1960s, the Düsseldorf artist Winfred Gaul focused on the signalling effect of traffic signs. Their clear colours and meaning inspired him to create the series “Traffic Signs and Signals”. In this series, he explored the interactions between the form, colour and content of a symbol. In this context, he also created paintings with a hexagonal outer shape and a changing colour composition within the picture: the “Sex-a-gons”. In each of these, the colour scheme emphasises the different visual relationships within the hexagons.
