About the workAngular stones break through wood – as if violating the order of nature. In this work, Düsseldorf artist Günther Uecker addressed the significance and tradition of Buddhist Zen gardens. In these places, larger rocks represent mountains or islands, while gravel symbolises water. Raking the stones into patterns is a meditative exercise. Uecker found a comparable form of introspection in repeated hammering – peaceful and yet brutal. This tension between destruction and reflection permeates his entire body of work.
