on display, room GAUL. Werke aus der Sammlung Kemp About the workBetween 1965 and 1972, Winfred Gaul produced numerous preparatory drawings exploring how a picture’s external shape determines its internal structure. In 1989, he developed a series of five paintings from this body of work and named them after cities in southern Spain and North Africa, including Tétouan in Morocco. Their starting point is a parallelogram, a quadrilateral with two pairs of parallel sides, here tilted to the right. The surface is divided by two adjacent triangles. Black-and-white as well as blue-and-red contrasts distinguish the internal forms from the outlines, lending the painting its impact.
