About the workWinfred Gaul’s Wipe Paintings reflect his interest in individual painting media. Around 1960, a single dominant colour determined the overall effect of his pieces. The horizontal application of colour using cloth rags accelerated the process while at the same time eliminating the artist’s personal style. The overlapping of the wiped streaks creates areas of greater density and subtle transitions, adding texture to the surface. The interplay of bands of colour lends the pictures a sense of order.
