About the workWinfred Gaul made the painting process itself into the subject of this early picture. Instead of a recognisable arrangement or form, it shows spontaneously placed brushstrokes that overlap in several layers. The paint is put down so thickly in places that it generates a slightly raised relief. Older strata shimmer through newer ones, revealing how the work was made. In this creative phase, the artist experimented with new techniques and the application of colour. It is among the few Informel works that later found their way into Willi Kemp’s collection.
