About the workNatural sponges first appeared in Yves Klein’s art in 1956. At first, he had only used them to apply paint, but then he came up with the idea of incorporating them into his monochrome works to symbolise expanding the pictorial space. Using an elaborate process, he developed his own shade of ultramarine, “International Klein Blue”, in order to obtain a colour that emanated a spiritual and captivating power. Galerie Schmela in Düsseldorf – one of the first and most important galleries in the young Federal Republic – opened in 1957 with a solo exhibition by Yves Klein.
