About the workThis figure simultaneously conveys a strong inner tension and vulnerability. The German American sculptor Bernhard Sopher combines clear forms with emotional expressiveness in this work. The calm and compact design of the body is also echoed in his large female bronzes created in 1925/26 for the "GeSoLei" exhibition, which flanked the west entrance of the museum together with Ernst Gottschalk’s statues. In 1934, Sopher was banned from working by the National Socialists because of his Jewish heritage and was forced to emigrate to the United States shortly thereafter. His sculptures were classified as "degenerate" and melted down.
