About the workRupprecht Geiger saw colours as carriers of emotions. He was particularly fascinated by the positive qualities of one colour: “Red is life, energy, potency, power, love, warmth, strength,” he wrote in his sketchbook “Redbook”. Basic shapes such as the oval provided the perfect stage for the Munich-based artist to emphasise these effects. From the 1950s onwards, he used fluorescent pigments to express vibrancy. These reflect light particularly strongly. Since these colours were originally used by the US military to enhance equipment visibility, Geiger was giving them a new meaning.
