on display, room 019 About the work“The war was an atrocious affair, but it was nevertheless something powerful. I couldn’t miss it under any circumstances,” said Otto Dix in an interview in 1961, long after his experiences at the front. War was completed before he became a soldier – it is a vision of an explosion, presented using techniques from modern painting styles such as Cubism or Futurism. Dix shows the viewer how he had imagined war before he experienced it for himself. He would later paint and draw much more drastic images of the fallen and wounded soldiers that he had seen in reality.
