About the workCarl Rudolph Sohn began this work shortly before he married Else Rethel in 1873. In addition to portrait sittings, he used an old photograph of his future wife as a confirmand. The painting was frequently shown in exhibitions during this period and praised by critics. The flatness of the image was considered novel. Else Sohn-Rethel – as she called herself in memory of her father, the painter Alfred Rethel – was an accomplished woman. She was a talented singer, watercolourist and was also very well connected. Her three sons became painters, while her daughter was a musician like her.
