Seven-Piece Montage, 1972
Acrylic on canvas; on wood
(H x W)115 × 94 cm
About the workThe artist Hermann Bartels, who moved to Düsseldorf in 1960, began his montage pictures a few years later. Until then, he had created relief-like paintings in which he applied the colour thickly to the canvas, sometimes with a palette knife. Now the spatial dimension of the coloured areas came more into focus. Due to the different angles, the canvases appear in various shades despite the same colour. Through this surface movement, Bartels emphasises the object-like quality of his painting and at the same time addresses its suitability as a means of optical illusion.
