About the workThe arable farming in his hometown of Soest characterised Wilhelm Morgner’s pictorial inventions. He chose scenes of sowing and harvesting as motifs. This painting belongs to a group of 26 works that examine the harmony between humans and nature. The figures merge with their surroundings in a play of colour fields, creating the impression of a larger, peaceful context. This is probably why Georg Tappert, Morgner’s former painting teacher from Worpswede, entitled these works "Astral Compositions". He was in charge of the artist’s estate, who died in the First World War in 1917.
