Typewriter, 1963
Typewriter, wood, fluorescent paint
(H x W x D)58 × 58 × 15 cm
About the workA typewriter transformed into a work of art? Because this object is painted in various fluorescent colours, it almost begins to flicker when you look at it. The machine also resembles a comic face. Together with the Düsseldorf artists Konrad Lueg, Gerhard Richter and Sigmar Polke, Manfred Kuttner introduced the term “Capitalist Realism” in 1963. This represented a German version of US Pop Art, which drew on motifs from advertising and everyday life. Well-known images and typical consumer goods of the 1960s were humorously declared as art.
