About the workWhat would the world look like if it were dissolved in colour? In his paintings, Emil Nolde wanted to convey an impression of this idea. The artist often found inspiration in the natural play of colours in flowers and plantings. He captured this view of a blooming garden on the Danish island of Alsen in the Baltic Sea. Between 1903 and 1916 he spent the summer there with his wife Ada. When painting the scene, Nolde concentrated on the choice and combination of strong colours. Until shortly before, he had been close to the Brücke group of artists. In 1907 he realized that he preferred to go his own way.
