Tempera on canvas
(H x W)82 × 48 cm
About the workGreen and brown lines traverse the pristine white canvas. The Belgian artist Georges Vantongerloo was an important representative of abstract painting. He designed his early pictures according to a strict system, combining rectangular forms with fields of primary colours. He was devoted to these principles as a founding member of the Dutch De Stijl movement. In 1937, he began to incorporate dynamic, curved lines into his work; this image marks this significant turning point in his oeuvre.
