Winter Evening on the Motorway, 1937
Oil on canvas
(H x W)60 × 80 cm
About the workAlthough planning for a German motorway network had already begun before the National Socialist era, the regime took pride in the large-scale expansion of major highways. The project was lauded as a symbol of technical, economic and cultural productivity. Artists were invited to document the construction project in their works and exhibitions were organised on this theme. Hans Schmitz-Wiedenbrück’s painting was likely created in this context, too. Until his death in the Second World War, the painter was extremely successful in the Nazi art world.
