About the workAfter his traumatic experiences as a soldier in the First World War, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff was no longer able to paint unspoilt idylls, although he longed for harmony between humans and nature. This contradiction gives rise to the tense mood of this scene. The work portrays the artist’s wife, Emy, together with her sister on the beach in the small village of Hohwacht on the Baltic coast of Holstein. Schmidt-Rottluff was a founding member of the Brücke artists’ group. Like his colleagues, he was interested in the depiction of humans in nature.
