on display, room 021 About the workThis relief belongs to a group of only 13 sculptural works by Oskar Schlemmer, which he created between 1919 and 1921. The theme is the human figure, which was translated into strictly arranged, elementary, three-dimensional forms. At the Bauhaus in Weimar, where Schlemmer taught at the time, the guiding principle was to reduce artistic expression to the basic elements of the straight line and the circle – an idea that is clearly communicated in these reliefs. The majority of the series, mostly executed in plaster, were lost during World War II; only three sculptures exist today.
