About the workThe fur and belt buckle indicate that this middle-aged lady was a member of the upper middle classes. The white bonnet frames the woman’s face and emphasises her sober expression. This portrait was probably accompanied by a similar one of her husband. At the time this painting was created, the Netherlands was experiencing an economic boom, and many wealthy citizens commissioned pictures of themselves. Alongside these portraits, the Haarlem artist Maarten van Heemskerk painted Christian and mythological scenes.
