About the workA long pipe, rolled tobacco, pipe stoppers and matches, a paper wrapper and an ashtray: shown here are various smoking utensils. In the 17th-century this subject developed into a special form of still life painting in the Netherlands. The tobacco trade was an important economic sector in Holland. Tobacco was also grown locally. Smoking was as frowned upon as it was widespread. Paintings of this kind were thus associated with both pleasure and vice.
