About the work“I feel most at home in colour,” confessed Walter Ophey. In 1900, the artist began his training in Düsseldorf and worked there until his death. Over his career, Ophey developed a special drawing technique in which he smudged the edges of coloured chalk, which lends his works on paper an unmistakable radiance. Since Ophey concentrated first and foremost on contours, large areas of the paper remain white. Characteristic of his works is the emphasis on the centre of the image and the choice of an unusual perspective. His preferred motifs were everyday scenes from the surroundings of Düsseldorf.
