About the workFor many Düsseldorf artists in the nineteenth century, Altenberg Cathedral in the Bergisches Land region was a major attraction. Caspar Scheuren, who was interested in landscapes with historical or legendary motifs, often travelled there to make studies. Here he shows an evening mass that seems to have sprung from the medieval past. When the painting was realised, the former ruins had been acquired by Prussia, rebuilt and established as a church shared between Catholic and Protestant worshippers – who both continue to use the building today.
