on display, room 007 About the workAngelika Kauffmann was one of the few successful women artists of the eighteenth century and was revered throughout Europe. Upon moving to Rome in 1782, she ran a salon where guests were entertained by performers such as Teresa Bandettini. After starting out as a dancer, Bandettini began improvising verse on stage. Kauffmann depicts her giving a performance, but the wreath of ivy also signals that she is a muse, a patron goddess of the arts. While an early version of the work was given to the artiste, Kauffmann likely painted this picture for herself.
