About the workMarried women covering their hair in public has a long tradition which dates back to antiquity. Wives predominantly wore veils, bonnets and hair nets, also due to their ability to hold the hairstyle in place and adapt to the shape of the individual’s head. During the 16th century, the emerging fashion for hats replaced these pieces. The origin of this hairnet has not been verified; according to some documents it comes from a grave found in a Rhenish cemetery.
