About the workThis type of strange-looking bottle compressed from a glass bubble was mass-produced in Central Europe from the thirteenth to the seventeenth century. Its characteristic inner constriction ring can be found in much earlier precursors, for example in jugs or bottles originating from the Islamic region. The somewhat overhanging top was a novelty. Such bottles served as storage or drinking vessels, perhaps for spirits. Our example was allegedly found in Mainz in 1979; it was likely made in one of the glassworks in the nearby Spessart region.
