About the work
The shape of this armchair is inspired by a large sugar candy, hence the name. The Finnish designer Eero Aarnio conceived the floor-level, spherical rocking chair, which was honoured with the "American Industrial Award" in 1968, for indoor and outdoor use. For his designs, Aarnio made particular use of the lightweight plastic materials polyester, fibreglass and acrylic glass, which were new in the furniture sector at the time. Due to their futuristic appearance, his designs were often used in science fiction films in the 1960s.
