About the workThe underwater world was imprinted into the hot glass, then fumed with colouring salts and overlaid with glass so that the air remained enclosed in the depressions. The vase was created directly at the furnace in dialogue with the glass designer Andries Dirk Copier. Copier began his apprenticeship at the Leerdam glass factory in 1914 and worked there until 1971. He introduced the form of experimental collaboration known as the “Unica” programme to the factory around 1923. Despite the German occupation of the Netherlands in the 1940s, glass production evidently continued in Leerdam.
