About the workSoda, or sodium carbonate, is a major component of modern glassware. Émile Gallé gave one of his most important works to a soda manufacturer around 1902/03 – this bowl alludes to this. Gallé used the motif of foaming soda making its way along the exterior wall on multiple occasions. The bowl itself appears to be dissolving, but in fact rests on a solid base that looks as if it has been turned. Before Gallé took over his father’s glass and ceramics business, he spent time in Weimar in 1865/66, where he studied mineralogy.
