About the workIn 1878, the artist Themistokles von Eckenbrecher, who was educated in Düsseldorf, was commissioned by the House of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen to portray the armoury in the family’s castle in Sigmaringen. The large collection of weapons was (and still is) presented in the style of a medieval armoury. The painting remained in the artist’s possession and entered the museum’s collection via his estate. It is possible that Karl, who was shown with his brother Leopold and had just been appointed King Carol I of Romania, did not like his seemingly casual depiction.
