About the workJesuit missionaries hoped that introducing European technologies in Beijing would cause the Chinese emperor to turn towards Christianity. Towards the end of the seventeenth century, European glass art met with considerable Chinese interest. The production of coloured glass soon took on independent traits, although it was never able to overtake glazed ceramics. It is generally difficult to determine whether an item of glassware dates from the long reign of Emperor Qianlong in the eighteenth century or whether it was made at a later date.
