About the workThe Dutch painter Frans van Mieris specialised in portraying the domestic life of the upper middle classes. This boy blowing bubbles was a recurring image in the artist’s studio during this period and was copied by other artists. In Leiden, where van Mieris worked, window scenes were extremely popular. On the one hand, they offered an effective, stage-like framing; on the other hand, they demonstrated the painter’s skill in the reproduction of carved stone and other surfaces.
