About the workThis painting by the sought-after Hanau court painter Anton Wilhelm Tischbein is an expression of the La Roche family's social standing. The father Georg von La Roche was made a nobleman in 1775. Surrounded by her children Franz, Georg, Fritz, Maximiliane and Louise (from left to right), Sophie von La Roche sits in the centre of the picture. She was a well-known writer at the time and ran her own salon. The marriage of her daughter Maximiliane to the merchant Peter Anton Brentano produced two equally well-known writers: Bettina von Arnim and Clemens Brentano.
