About the work This work was jointly created by two graduates of the Düsseldorf Art Academy: Hugo Zieger painted the figures, Carl Becker was responsible for the beach, sky and surf. The prior title "Nymphs on the Beach" places the painting in a mythological world: two sea nymphs listen to the flute-playing shepherd god Pan. Since the figures depicted are not human-animal hybrid as in Greek mythology, the scene may also be set in reality. But with references to ancient mythology such nude depictions were popular in order to make erotic themes "socially acceptable".
