About the workFascinated by the striking cypresses in the gardens of the Villa d’Este in Tivoli, Johann Wilhelm Schirmer noted in his diary in August 1839: “I must return here to make studies.” The following year he wrote: “In Tivoli I have worked more than ever before in my life, so that by the end I was almost unable to draw another stroke with the pen in my hand.” The result was impressive tree portraits of the famous pines and cypresses of the Villa d’Este. Slightly modified groups of trees later served as repeated motifs in Schirmer’s oil sketches and paintings.
