About the workA “super light” chair of great simplicity. For its design, Gio Ponti took measurements from plain wooden chairs. The restrained use of sturdy ash wood and light wickerwork resulted in a seat that weighs just 1700 grammes. Produced at low cost, the “Superleggera” was intended to be affordable for the masses, but this proved unfeasible due to the complex manufacturing process. Ponti was not only a designer, but also one of the most prominent architects of his time. He set new benchmarks with buildings such as the Pirelli Tower, which was erected in Milan in 1958.
