About the work
This cantilever chair was developed by the Hungarian designer Anton Lorenz, who lived in Berlin. In 1929, he had already founded his own metal workshop "DESTA" (German Tubular Steel Furniture), where he produced his own designs as well as those of Bauhaus designer Marcel Breuer, among others. The use of cold-bent tubular steel had been one of the themes in European design since the 1920s. Dispensing with the need to heat the steel enabled a faster machining process and revolutionised production and design practice. Lorenz went to the USA in 1939 and founded a company where he produced patented furniture under licence.
