About the workUniform grey waves stretch across the white canvas. Towards the centre of the picture, the thinning lines become denser and their colour intensity increases. Through this variation in her precise visual pattern, Bridget Riley creates the fleeting impression of a vibration. The optical effect of movement in simple geometric structures, which has been a central motif in the British artist’s oeuvre since the early 1960s, helped her to achieve international success. In 1968, Riley was the first woman to win a prize at the renowned Venice Biennale.
