on display, room 010.2 About the workIn the nineteenth century, wealthy artists would emphasise their social status with luxurious, less practical studios, like the one in this picture. Here a painter is showing a recently completed landscape to a prospective buyer. His box of paints is still open beside it. The artist depicted bears a strong resemblance to Ferdinand Brütt himself. He preferred to capture the world of the upper middle classes. Successful nineteenth-century artists could be part of this milieu themselves. Brütt took up residence in Düsseldorf in the mid-1870s.
