on display, room 006.1 About the workBecause of the Seven Years' War, the Venetian painter Bernardo Bellotto left Dresden and worked in Vienna from 1759–1761. One of his numerous city views shows the Old University. While the square and the streets lie in the shadow of the densely constructed buildings, the baroque architecture of the New Assembly Hall with ist attached observatory and the facade of the Jesuit Church are illuminated by the evening sun. The splendour, but also the confinement of the city are realistically portrayed. This painting was the first to be purchased by the Kunstpalast after the Second World War.
