About the workWilhelm Hambüchen, who was trained at the Düsseldorf School of Applied Arts, turned from stage design to landscape painting, which he was largely self-taught in. He was friends with several academic painters and shared their interest in the North Sea. In this dyke landscape at low tide, he used broad brushstrokes to contrast shades of blue and green with an earthy brown. The high horizon is emphasised by a row of wind-blown trees, creating ample space for the changing tides. Together with the reflections of the low sun, this creates a diffuse atmosphere.
