About the workPaintings with floral wreaths and Christian motifs were very popular in the 16th and 17th centuries. They were sometimes created in a division of labour. The central scene here was probably painted by the Flemish artist Frans Francken III, who belonged to a successful Antwerp family of painters. It depicts the moment when the angel Gabriel announces to the Virgin Mary that she will give birth to Jesus. The flowers, on the other hand, are attributed to the Flemish artist Frans Ykens. They symbolise Mary's Christian virtues which Catholics highly venerated at the time of the creation of this work.
