About the workIn ancient times, the Sibyls were pagan prophetesses. From the end of the sixteenth century, Sibyl Agrippina was portrayed with dark skin, which was meant to acknowledge the wisdom of the African cultural sphere. Additionally, this Sibyl embodies one of the four continents that were known at that time: Africa, Asia, America and Europe. It can be assumed that the artist’s model was a woman from one of the Dutch colonies in Africa. The painting is attributed to Jan van den Hoecke, who trained under Peter Paul Rubens for a time.
