About the workThis copy is based on a painting that Vittore Carpaccio created for the church of San Giobbe in Venice. The original has been in the museum Gallerie dell’Accademia since 1815. It depicts a scene from the Gospel of Luke in the Bible. 40 days after birth, Mary brings the baby Jesus to a temple, where the priest Simeon recognises in him the prophesied Messiah, a mediator to God. It is not known who made this copy. As part of the collection of the Düsseldorf Art Acade-my it served as a model for students to imitate and thus testifies to how exemplary Italian art was at the time.
